The Adrian A. Martinez Scholarship Awards

Martinez Scholarship Recipients (L to R) Deedy Chang, Han Lee, and Hanna Murphy

Before the fast-paced events of the Adrian A. Martinez Classic kicked off at Emerson Field on June 1, out on the track four Concord-Carlisle High School graduating seniors had their moment in the sun.

Deedy Chang, Han Lee, Hanna Murphy, and Sam Randle are this year’s recipients of generous scholarships from the Adrian A. Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Established by the Martinez family, this scholarship fund honors their son Adrian, Concord-Carlisle High School class of 2002. Adrian was a scholar-athlete, track team captain and champion miler. The summer after graduating from Williams College, he was playing in a pickup soccer game when he died suddenly of cardiac heart arrest.

The Scholarship Fund of Concord and Carlisle administers the Martinez award process that is based on financial need. Since 2007, 33 high school seniors have received Martinez scholarships as they head off to college.

Martinez Scholarship awardee Deedy Chang will take her talents to the University of Michigan where she plans to pursue Human Life Studies. Her classmate Han Lee, a captain of the CCHS Swim and Dive team, will attend Brandeis University to major in neuroscience.

Cross-country runner Hanna Murphy will attend Xavier University next year, with plans to major in chemistry and English. Her long-term goals include medical school. Headed for Springfield College in the fall, Sam Randle will play football and major in psychology. On the CCHS track team, he is a discus thrower and member of the very fast 4x100 meter relay team.

The Adrian Martinez Classic, now a nationally recognized track event attracting elite runners, was also established by the Martinez family. It raises funds for the Friends of CCHS Track and Field and for the Adrian A. Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund.
